Persecution did not stop her from standing in the gap

Esther (not her real name) comes from a minority people group in Singapore and came to know Jesus as a young student. As one of the very few Punjabi Christians, she was unable to share her faith openly as she feared being rejected and persecuted by her ethnic community. Yet, this did not stop her from loving Jesus. Since the 80s, she has been interceding regularly with a prayer group from her church and she shares her heart for prayer with us.

What drives you to be consistent in seeking the Lord?

Being in a community that loves Jesus. It is so much easier with people who are praying with you and for you.

What do you enjoy most about prayer?

Encountering God through worship, especially Spirit-led worship where we freely express ourselves through dance, hymns, and spiritual songs. The Lord brings tears of joy and laughter when we experience the touch of God.

What motivates you to intercede for others?

When everyone gets a different part of a revelation, we piece them together to reveal the full picture of what God is saying. When God speaks, we understand His heart – which gives me greater motivation to pray.

How has your prayer life influenced your walk with God, especially in times of struggle and pain?

Seemingly unanswered prayers have ironically grown my trust in the Lord and my understanding of who He is.

Through difficult times, I've grown in patience and perseverance. I have learnt to surrender my expectations and to trust Him – if God says so, it will be so.

Taking "No" as an answer is a learning point too. I am learning to accept His will in every situation.

Could you share an incident where your prayer life impacted your daily life significantly?

There was a major medical crisis where I spent hours in prayer daily alone and with friends. That intercession brought about deep faith in the family member we were praying for.

How do you hope to grow your prayer life?

I would like to keep watch and pray through the coming times, troubled times, so I know what to do.

We do not understand many things in our changing world and I desire to keep praying for the saints as the Word commands us to!

Also, to grow in my understanding of the Word because the more I know the Word, the more effective my intercession will be.

Lastly, what is your encouragement to those who are struggling in their prayer life?

If you do not know where to begin, there are apps you can use to help you get started in prayer for example, YouVersion or Abide. It is helpful to start with a prayer guide and there are many out there!

Pray with a friend or join a prayer group. Joining a group or prayer meetings helps us to be consistent, and consistency helps us build a good habit.

Pray the Word as you read it. When what you read touches your heart, turn it into a prayer. Tell God what it means to you. Basically, talk to God – as He talks to you.
